Manifest MedEx

Telling the complex stories of health data delivery at work for Californians. Helping this nonprofit health information exchange grow from initial brand communications foundations through to impactful case studies and their first-ever annual report.

Task

We met Manifest MedEx (MX) shortly after its founding — a young nonprofit formed from the merger of two innovators with an ambitious CEO who had previously worked with President Obama as Senior Advisor for Health Innovation and Technology. Eager to support healthcare in California by connecting patient information statewide to improve care coordination and public health efforts, the organization asked us to develop its brand strategy and messaging.

Amplifying health data network impact

We met Manifest MedEx (MX) shortly after its founding — a young nonprofit formed from the merger of two innovators with an ambitious CEO who had previously worked with President Obama as Senior Advisor for Health Innovation and Technology. Eager to support healthcare in California by connecting patient information statewide to improve care coordination and public health efforts, the organization asked us to develop its brand strategy and messaging

Starting with an on-site brand workshop with MX’s key stakeholders, we defined their category positioning and laid the foundation for strategies designed to energize potential partners, support rapid team growth, and position the network as the go-to leader in health data exchange and innovation. Building on that foundation, we shifted our focus to elevating thought leadership and launching campaigns that would make the brand the right choice for health plans, medical groups, hospitals, and other healthcare organizations.

Our long-standing partnership has resulted in a steady pipeline of rich external communications, including case studies, video content, media coverage, speaking engagements, and MX’s inaugural annual report, demonstrating the valuable work that the organization delivers on the healthcare front lines.

Outcomes
Manifest MedEx is now California’s largest nonprofit health data network  — delivering crucial health information for more than 40 million people and serving as a leader in transforming health across the state.

⬤ 01. Messaging and Content

Evolving the message to match the organization’s growth

Uncommon Bold helped evolve Manifest MedEx’s foundational messaging during two key phases of growth: first with the initial website after the post-merger launch and then again years later when the network had expanded significantly with a major website update in 2022.

The first Manifest MedEx website was a major signal of the brand’s position as “a confident and pragmatic facilitator transforming California healthcare” to skeptical health data sharing leaders in the state. Our team worked closely with MX on product naming and position, establishing a vision statement, and sharpening stories of health data at work before bringing on the agency This Is Big to lead website design and development at the start of 2018. The website language avoided acronyms, speaking directly to healthcare leaders with lines like “your job is to make healthcare better, our job is to get you the information you need,” and advancing the new “health data utility” framing for interoperability. The website celebrated 150 members and six million clinical records on the network.

In 2022 the organization’s network had seen a more than 250% increase in participants, and our website content refresh work focused on reflecting its expanded reach and showcasing real-world results. We developed updated content for key pages, incorporating new case studies, member quotes, webinars, and blog content while removing outdated COVID-19 and Cal-HOP references for a more engaging experience. This work strengthened MX’s ability to engage website visitors with compelling, up-to-date messaging and a more intuitive content experience.

“We’re truly in love with our brand refresh from Uncommon Bold. It emphasizes the hard power voice we’re trying to lean into and brought us into this decade and beyond. We love the colors and the contrast of the fonts — bringing our brand to life in a clean and mature way.”
