Q3 2023 Inspiration Report: Field Guides

The Easter EP is one of my favorites at the moment. Ashley Henry & The RE: Ensemble did a cover of “The World is Yours” by Nas that is the perfect blend of smooth and soulful. It’s hypnotic!

My son and I have had a ton of fun adding a new sensory layer to hanging out in the backyard by using this wonderful (free) app to ID birds by their songs/sounds. He also figured out how to do a very accurate Great Horned Owl!

I recently came across Canadian photographer Baljit Singh and love her style.

We celebrated Adalina’s 1st birthday and our 1st year as parents. It was so powerful to feel the love and community we have built in spite of not living near our immediate families.

I have a growing collection of Japanese incense purchased abroad, at a wonderful teeny shop in Japantown, and at the Heath Newstand. Apotheke Fragrance has wonderful handmade options including my favorites: 24k Rose and Maghreb Bukhoor.

The Retrievals podcast is brutal, emotional reporting from the New York Times about women’s health, women’s pain, medical ethics, and addiction.

Took some time to decompress and disconnect in Joshua Tree. Watched the sun rise and saw all kinds of wildlife. Nature is so beautiful.

We’ve all been obsessed with Sarah DiGregorio’s book Taking Care: The Story of Nursing and Its Power to Change Our World and were honored when Sarah joined our team for a virtual book club meeting.

I spent a lot of July up by lakes in the Sierras, and brought along with me my worn and annotated copy of the John Muir Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada. Over many, many years of close study he drew and described over 1,700 species — everything from molds and mosses to birds and fish to constellations. You can tell the book is a true labor of love.

I have been accumulating more houseplants this summer, and I have been thinking about how plants can teach us patience and growth. Attempting to control every aspect of them can sometimes end up damaging them, but they do best when you leave them to do their own growth.
