Q1 2023 Inspiration Report: Invisible Threads

My mom’s beautiful botanical artwork is inspiring me. We put together a website for her over winter break.

Gallery spaces are on my mind as we prepare for our book launch later this year. In particular the spaces at CIVA Brussels, a museum of Architecture, Landscape, Urban Planning, bring together a uniquely natural collection.

I recently watched this hidden gem of a film Koibumi (Love Letter) from 1953 by Tanaka Kinuyo. She was an accomplished actress at an early age, but went on to become a film director in her own right (the second woman to do so in Japanese history).

Training for my next half-marathon, Boston’s Run To Remember in May.

After the heavy rain, I’ve been spending more time outside. The crisp, fresh air smells clean after all the rain, and the vibrant green earth is just so happy right now.

No better way to spend an afternoon than sampling perfumes at the Ministry of Scent and picking out something new for spring. Plus, incredible packaging design and typography inspiration.

“Chairs are arranged along the periphery of the circular space, around a large fireplace where smudges and sacred fires are performed. Placards bearing the seven grandfather teachings — love, truth, respect, wisdom, humility, honesty and bravery — act as stalwart reminders to the faithful. The ceiling has been painted yellow, red, black and white to illustrate the medicine wheel. It is one of the first hospital-based medicine lodges in Canada.”

A Heart That Works, Robert Delaney’s memoir, is so beautiful. It’s devastatingly sad, as well as funny and uplifting. Delaney, as an American living in the UK, shares momentous loss while also taking a critical look at the differences between our healthcare systems.

Movement Mondays has become a welcome addition to our week. It gives us a chance to take a moment at the start of the week for some stretching and connection.

I ordered seeds from the Experimental Farm Network including skullcap, calendula, evening primrose, marshmallow, and baptisia. I’ll be attempting a medicinal patch in the community garden this spring. I chose these seeds by pulling cards from a botanical deck called “Dirt Gems.”

On Saturdays, I now work the cash register for New Morning Farm Market. The farmers market has been in my Forest Hills neighborhood of DC for 50 years.

I had the opportunity to visit Muir Beach for the first time, and it was such a therapeutic experience for me. I got to hike up one of the mountains and reached the top just in time to see the sunset!
